Forst is clearly the most famous village in the Pfalz. The basalt, which is abundant in the local bedrock and binds heat to itself, has a large share in this. This heat is then released back into the vineyard at night, limiting temperature fluctuations and helping the grapes to ripen better. Fun fact: the basalt stones were brought here by hand from the forest hundreds of years ago. Wine was fermented and aged in oak barrels.
Weingut Von Winning is a famous Palatinate winery with a long tradition - it was founded in 1849.
The turning point came in 2007 when the winery got new owners and began to manage its 40 hectares of vineyards biodynamically. In the cellar, they returned to traditional methods of fermentation and maturation in larger oak barrels with a minimum of additives and other interventions. The grapes come from the most famous Palatinate vineyards near Forst and Deidesheim - the Kirchenstück, Ungeheuer, Pechstein, Kalkofen and many more. These are definitely among the most interesting wines Germany has to offer. Vineyards are set on a colorful cocktail of subsoils - there is red and yellow sandstone, limestone from the former coral reefs, and also pieces of basalt brought in the 18th century from the Palatinate forest. Most of the vineyards are planted with Riesling and are oriented to the east and south-east. As a result, grapes in this warmest corner of Germany reach ripeness at the right moment. In addition to the "Von Winning'' line, the winery also makes an entry range of wines under the "Dr.Deinhard" brand.
